Painting ceilings requires specific skill because often several layers of paint have been applied to a ceiling and of course you have to work ‘horizontally’.
Action Plan for painting the ceiling
In older buildings in particular, we regularly come across ceilings that have a layer of blue lime, a smudge-proof product that cannot painted over with a water-based paint. Before the ceiling can be painted, it is extremely important to completely remove the old layers of blue lime and other paint, to prevent cracks and bubbles forming in the newly applied paint layer. In case of painted ceilings, it is also important to determine whether the floor above is a living area, an attic, or a (flat) roof. To get the best result, we apply different painting techniques in different situations.
Determining the condition of the ceiling
A test is carried out to determine the state of the ceiling: a sample from the existing ceiling is sent to one of our paint suppliers (Sigma coatings or Sikkens coatings) who then draw up a paint-technical report.
Using this report, we draw up an action plan, and establish the price per square metre; the worst-case scenario being a total stripping and cleaning of the entire surface of the ceiling. In case of plastered ceilings with ornaments, we use the so-called 'peel away' system. Smooth surfaces (without ornaments) are at worst cleaned by stripping and/or steaming and/or cleaning with water containing a biodegradable additive. Also, painting bathroom ceilings demands a different approach, where it is essential that the paint used is permeable, but must in some cases be applied as a seal.
