Water-based paint versus solvent-based paint
Water-based paint (acrylic paint) dries quickly, has little odour and contains few volatile organic compounds, making it more environmentally friendly and easy to use. Solvent-based paint (alkyd paint) dries more slowly, often provides a higher gloss and adheres better to porous wood. For restorations of historic buildings, solvent-based paint is sometimes deliberately chosen for its excellent penetration and adhesion.
